John will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his daughters Peggy Sattler (Neil Bradford) and Deborah Sattler (James O'Malley), and his cherished grandchildren Jonathan, Madeleine, Emily, Harry and Cole. Predeceased by his beloved wife Elizabeth and son Jeffrey and sister in-law Anne Chrysler (Ken).
Born in Transylvania, John immigrated to Canada at age 14 with his parents Tom and Mary, and his siblings Timmy, Marie and Gretchen. They joined other close extended family members, including his aunts Mary and Kate and his cousins Hildegarde and Hilda, and settled in Dundas, Ontario. Following the loss of his wife in 2008 and his son in 2018, John achieved his wish of living independently in his own home until the very end.
He was devoted to his family and especially loved being a grandpa. His happiest memories include large family gatherings, camping and boating with his wife and three children, his many family trips to Florida and abroad, and in his later years, numerous family cruises.
John was a proud carpenter who could fix anything. He was a friend to many, and enjoyed spending time with his regular coffee buddies at McDonalds. He was well-known and much loved by his neighbours, always ready to help or provide advice, and had a constant supply of dog treats for the dog-walkers in the neighbourhood. He took up a variety of hobbies after his retirement from Ryco, including photo framing, gardening, wine making, clock repair, trivet making, and other woodworking crafts. He remained ever hopeful, but also skeptical, about the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup.
John's family wish to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and McMaster Family Health Team for their care and compassion.
Visitation will take place at the Marlatt Funeral Home - Swackhamer Chapel, 195 King Street West, Dundas on Monday, January 6th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Family and friends are invited to join in a celebration of John's life in the Marlatt Swackhamer Chapel on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Lung Association.
