Carlton Raymond Owens, 98, formerly of East Hartford and the Vernon/Manchester area, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 with his caring family by his side. Carlton was the loving husband of over 64 years to the late Rita E. (Bellovoda) Owens. Born in Norridgewock, Maine on December 24, 1925, a son of the late John and Anabell (Waugh) Owens, he had been a resident of the Vernon/Manchester area for many years prior to moving to East Hartford over fifteen years ago. Carlton was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and United States Army during World War II. He was a longtime member of Local 559 in South Windsor and was employed for 34 years as a Truck Driver by A & P Grocery Stores, East Hartford. After retiring from A & P, he went to work for Gerber Scientific in South Windsor for several years as a Security Guard. In his retirement years, he was a talented billiards pool player who loved shooting pool at the Vernon Senior Center. He also loved traveling back to Maine and visiting relatives, friends, and areas where he grew up. Most of all, Carlton was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his time spent with his entire family.
Carlton is survived by his five beloved sons, Dennis Owens of Lewiston, Maine, David Owens and his wife Myrna of Manchester, Robert Owens of Middletown, Daniel Owens and his wife Sharon of Enfield, Carl Owens and his wife Terri of Stafford Springs; 18 special grandchildren; 43 cherished great-grandchildren; 14 adored great-great grandchild; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Along with his late wife and parents, Carlton was predeceased by a son, Russell Owens of East Hartford, his beautiful daughter Christine Elaine (Owens) Davis of Norwich in 1972, and all of his siblings.
Funeral service will be Friday (April 26, 2024) at 11 am at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. Burial with military honors will follow at East Cemetery, (Westminster Section), East Center Street, Manchester. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Friday morning (April 26th) from 10 – 11 am.
