

Mary Christine Geary, 84, of South Windsor and formerly of East Hartford, peacefully journeyed home to join her family in Heaven on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at her home. Born in Hartford on December 11, 1938, a daughter of the late William Bernard Geary, Sr. and Johanna (Flaherty) Geary, she had been a lifelong resident of East Hartford prior to moving to South Windsor over five years ago. Mary was a graduate of East Hartford High School, class of 1956 and Columbia University in New York City, class of 1960. She also earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University, and was a member of the ADK Sorority. Mary retired as an Elementary School Teacher from the town of East Hartford Board of Education after over 35 years of teaching at the Franklin H. Mayberry Elementary School. She loved her students and was supportive of all of them and always made sure they all had all the supplies they needed to be successful.
A devout catholic, Mary was a faithful communicant of St. Rose Church, East Hartford and a member of the church Ladies Guild. She would volunteer at the annual church carnival with her brother Bill, and was a member of other church committees. She loved to travel with her brother Bill, especially on cruises and bus trips. She was an avid reader and loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox and UConn Women’s basketball team. A lover of flowers, she was talented in making floral arrangements for her home and others to enjoy. Most of all, Mary was a devoted sister, aunt, and teacher who was a generous individual to everyone she knew, especially when it came to her students.
Mary is survived by two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Geary of South Windsor, Penny Geary of West Hartford; two nieces, Margaret Arora and her husband Ajay of South Windsor, Susan Ault and her husband Jon of Newington; two nephews, Tom Geary and his wife Deborah and their two daughters Abby and Liz all of Virginia, Dan Geary and his wife Lisa and their daughter Sarah all of Rhode Island; several cousins, former students, and dear friends. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her three beloved brothers, William Bernard Geary, Jr. of East Hartford with whom she made her home, Thomas Geary of South Windsor, and Joseph Geary of East Hartford.
Funeral service will be Tuesday (July 18, 2023) at 10:30 am from the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 am at St. Rose Church of North American Martyr’s Parish, 33 Church Street, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Silver Lane Cemetery, (Section A), East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday morning from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
