

Richard “Mac” James McCarthy, 89, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Born in Hartford on July 11, 1928, he was a lifelong resident of East Hartford. He was married to the late Irma McCarthy, with whom he shared almost 50 years together. Mac was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He started work at the Hartford Electric Light Company in 1949, working there until his retirement in 1991, and was an active member of the H.E.L.C.O. Morning Club. Mac loved contributing to his community, frequently donating blood and becoming a member of the “Golden Rule Club”, signifying over 300 units of platelets had been donated. He was a driver for 14 years for the Road to Recovery Program, and was active in East Hartford Little League and Midget football. Mac was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Christopher division, the Irish American Home Society, and was a longtime Trustee of St. Christopher Church.
Mac is survived by his daughter; Judy Vitukinas and her husband Richard of Cromwell, his son; Patrick McCarthy and wife Cherie of Grand Rapids, MI, two brothers; Gary Roberts of Southington, and Larry Roberts of Warren, ME, a sister; Maryann Hawk of West Hartford, a sister-in-law; Roseann Sauer of Andover, four beloved grandchildren; Trevor, Savannah, and Liam McCarthy, and Laura Markwald; and one great grandchild Connor Markwald.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, (August 29th) at 10:30 am at St. Christopher Campus of St. Edmonds Campion Parish, 570 Brewer Street East Hartford. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 930 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call on Monday (August 28) from 3-7pm at the D’ESOPO East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford.
