

Thomas “Tom” D. Hurley, Jr., 96, of Glastonbury and formerly of East Hartford, peacefully entered into eternal life on Friday, July 19, 2024 at his residence with his beloved wife by his side. Tom was the loving husband for over 75 years to Jill (Thibodeau) Hurley. Born in Waterbury on October 27, 1927, he was a son of the late Thomas D. and Bernice (Howd) Hurley, he had been a resident on Monroe Street, East Hartford for over 70 years prior to moving to Glastonbury three years ago. A graduate of Waterbury High School, class of 1945, he was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A hard working person, Tom held many positions at several area businesses, starting with the Hartford Times newspaper where he met his beloved wife Jill who happened to be his supervisor. He later would work several years at Consolidated Cigar Corporation in Glastonbury and Milane Nursery in Cromwell. Tom would finally retire in his 80’s from D’Esopo Funeral Chapels in East Hartford and Wethersfield where he worked for over 20 years.
A devout catholic and a man of strong faith, Tom was a long time active communicant of St. Christopher Church in East Hartford. At St. Christopher Tom was a former usher, counter and head counter for several years. He was also a member of the parish council, men’s club, retiree’s club, and finance council. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #4 in East Hartford and was very proud of his Irish heritage.
Tom loved his family and taught his entire family to ski and swim. He enjoyed skiing with everyone and especially swimming in his own in-ground swimming pool, hosting family parties, and going to the beach with his wife. He loved music and was known to hum and sing a song or two; he liked playing cards, especially the game of cribbage; he was an avid reader; and he loved to just talk to people. Most of all, he was a proud and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his entire family.
Along with his beloved wife Jill, Tom is survived by four sons, James P. Hurley and his wife Suellyn of Marlborough, Alan R. Hurley and his wife Mary of Holliston, MA, Thomas P. Hurley and his wife Mary of Niantic, Richard J. Hurley and his wife Mary of Waterford; a daughter, Audrey M. Hurley of Glastonbury; and nine special grandchildren, Nicholas Hurley and his wife Katie, Ursula Hurley, Matthew Bjorkman and his wife Megan, Michael Hurley and his wife Lauren, Ryan Bjorkman, Alex Hurley and his wife Eve, Shannon Hurley, Sean Hurley, Dillon Lindberg; and seven adored great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Marguerite Riley of Litchfield; several nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and dear friends. Besides his parents, Tom was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Morrone.
In the best interest of his beloved wife, a private funeral service and burial with military honors at Hillstown Road Cemetery, (Veteran’s Field), Manchester will be at the convenience of the family.
