

William J. Sander, Sr., 100, of East Hartford, loving husband of the late Dorothy (Davies) Sander and the late Esther (Anderson) Sander, peacefully passed away at his home on Thursday (June 19, 2008) with his caring daughter, Beverly, by his side. Born in Hartford on April 23, 1908, a son of the late Joseph M. and Eva (Ostrout) Sander, he had been a life-long resident of East Hartford. Prior to his retirement he was employed for 27 years by Hamilton Standard Propeller in Windsor Locks, retiring as a general foreman. William was instrumental in the founding of the original East Hartford Dovelette softball team along with being the first manager for the East Hartford Rotary Little League Baseball team in 1953. William was a long-time member of the East Hartford Northend Senior Citizens where he was their president for 20 years. He was also a very good former duckpin bowler in the East Hartford area. However, many will remember William as a devoted and loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox who followed them faithfully through his entire life. Besides his beloved wives and parents, William was predeceased by a brother, Earl Sander and four sisters, Mary Sadler, Eva Koubik, Gladys Langer, and Dorothy Pongratz. William is survived by two sons, William J. Sander, Jr. of Manchester, and Gary A. Sander and his wife, Dawn, of Union, KY; four daughters, Mary Ruth Nowak and her husband, Joseph, of Manchester, Beverly J. Bartlett of East Hartford with whom he made his home, Judith A. Ermisch of Falmouth, MA, Nancy S. Choutka and her husband, Robert, of South Windsor; a brother, Richard Sander and his wife, Rita, of Vernon; 22 special grandchildren; 32 adored great-grandchildren; three precious great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Private funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in William's memory may be made to the St. Christopher Church Building Fund, 538 Brewer Street, East Hartford, CT 06118.
