Betty Jean (Fox) Chapman, age 88, of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2021 surrounded by her loving children. She was born October 26, 1932 to Harvey and Flora Bell (Powell) Fox in Vincennes, Indiana. Betty married the love of her life, John A. Chapman, Jr on November 14, 1955. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage raising seven children together and delighting in their role as grandparents before John’s death on January 4, 2006.
Betty served in the Army achieving the rank of First Sergeant. She volunteered on nearly every committee at her children’s schools, becoming President of many of them. If she saw a need for a program that did not exist at their school, she started the program. She worked for the Catholic Diocese of El Paso directly under Bishop Sidney Metzger for 14 years. She also co-owned and ran a successful advertising agency with John. Betty accomplished all of this, and much more, while remaining a devoted wife and mother.
She is survived by her children, Natalie Cook and husband, Brad; John T. Chapman and wife Cathlene; Timothy Chapman and wife, Kelly; Jayne Pynes and husband, Patrick; Jody (Mary Josephine) Chapman; Joseph Chapman; and Beverley Court and husband, Clarence. She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, Jessica (Cook) Sledge and husband, Blake; Bradford A. Cook; Jon Jacob Chapman (son of John and Cathlene); Eryn Pynes; Ean Pynes; Jen (Pynes) Roberts and partner, Derek Cleghorn; Amanda (Pynes) Mason and husband, Cameron; and Sarah (Court) Turner. She is survived by her cherished great-grandchildren, Jayden and Bailey Sledge; Zakary and Liliana Sherman (children of Jen Roberts); and Sophia Turner. Betty is also survived by sister, Fleta (Fox) Lowe and husband, Jack of Vincennes, Indiana. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Harvey Fox; sister, Zelma Decker and husband, Maurice; and sister, Thelma VanWey and husband, Bill.
Services will be held at Monday, February 15, 2021 at 11:00 am at Ft. Bliss Cemetery, with military honors, attended by immediate family only due to Covid protocols.
