

Hampton Jervis Godfrey, an ‘Old Hokie’ graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VA Tech) and retired Colonel of the United States Army died on April 24, 2012. Col. Godfrey was a veteran of 31 years of service in the US Army during WW II, the Korean Conflict, and the Viet Nam era. He served as an officer in the Corps of Engineers and the Air Defense Artillery. Among numerous service decorations, Col. Godfrey was awarded the Legion of Merit on three occasions and the Army Commendation Medal four times. He represented the US Government in personal meetings with King Hussein of Jordan and President Bourgibba of Tunisia. Subsequent to his military retirement, Col. Godfrey was employed by Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso as Assistant Administrator for eight years. Col. Godfrey resided in El Paso for 41 years. Col. Godfrey was preceded in death in 2003 by his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha Anne Bennington Godfrey. Survivors include his daughter, Lynn Godfrey Hancock and son-in-law, Mike, of Federal Way, WA, grandson Benjamin Godfrey Hancock and wife Janice of Washington DC. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Godfrey, of Colonial Heights, VA and a nephew, Jay Godfrey, of Seattle, WA. Burial will be in the Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors. The graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Col. Hampton J.
