Our most precious and dear mother, “Penny” Ayub, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2022. Loraine Marie Pennock was born on a farm in Bourbon, Missouri on November 10, 1927. As a young girl “Rainy” was referred to as a tom-boy, the only female baseball player on her school’s team. She was Valedictorian of her high school class in Sullivan, Missouri.
After graduation, she attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri where she became a Registered Nurse and married Pablo Ayub, M.D. They settled in El Paso, Texas and grew their family of six children: Vivian Denise Gelo (Doug), Leonard Paul, John Anthony, Sherry Ellen Soele (Fred), Joyce Loraine Zarowski (Alan), and Mark Daniel (Lu).
All who knew her were amazed at how “Penny” juggled her many responsibilities as mother, homemaker, office manager, and nurse, along with church, women’s organizations and volunteer work. As a registered nurse, she was board certified in both Medical-Surgery and Oncology. She worked at Farah Mfg. Company, Hotel Dieu, Providence, and Sierra Medical Center. However, her last 20 years in nursing were spent as a charge nurse and an Oncology nurse at Las Palmas Hospital until she retired at age 75.
Loraine is pre-deceased by her parents Leonard and Lizzie Dyle Pennock; her siblings Lenora and Tom; and her three precious sons Michael, Paul, and Tony. Her grandchildren by blood and heart are: Stephen and Darron Saunders (Carlie) and Adam Zarowski; Damon Baldi (Veronica); Clay Hooten (Amber); Marcus and Mario Quintana (Kate); Casey, Ashley, and Barnett Gelo; Frederick Paul Soele; Traci (Hunter) and Gretchen Ayub; and Travis and Austin Burgos. Her great grandchildren include Tabitha Woods (Zach); Dylan and Jenna Saunders; Dante Baldi; Elyse, Madyson, and Pearce Hooten; Hailey, Luca, and George Quintana; Valentina and Arya Gelo; Esmea Segura and Alana Taylor. Her great great-grandchildren are Tomas and Mona Woods.
She would want all who knew her, especially family, friends, and her “golden girls,” to realize that she loved them with all her heart. Rest assured, that we each know how special we were to her and that whatever she undertook to do on our behalf was done with grace, generosity, diligence and love!
