Manuel (Manny) Varela Martinez passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at the age of 81. He was born on June 20, 1944.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sonia Thelma Martinez; his mother, Gloria Martinez; and his mother-in-law, Lucia A. Flynn.
Manny is survived by his four children: Kathy Aranda (Fernando), Richard Martinez (Jennifer), Mark Martinez (Kristian), and Steve Martinez (Johanna), 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, his brother, Salvador, and his sisters, Gloria and Azucena.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Manny served 30 years active and reserve duty, including two tours in Vietnam aboard the USS Ticonderoga and USS Hancock, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He later served 15 years as a Deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department, excelled as a top salesman for Hunts Corporation, founded TCB Marketing, and owned Hawkins Driving School.
Manny was active in his community, supporting the Cielo Vista Optimists and the Burges High School Booster Club. He coached numerous youth baseball and football teams, providing opportunities for children, including his own, to build skills and learn teamwork.
Visitation will be held at Funeraria del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Avenue, on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 North Mesa Street, on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., followed by interment of ashes with military honors at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Avenue.
Manny will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and a man whose life was defined by service to his country, his community, and his family.
