

Maria Luz Vega “Grandma Lucy” passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 17, 2017. She is preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life Hector M. Vega, Sr., parents Jose and Josefina Lopez, sisters Magdalena Orosco, Tomasa Lopez, Margarita Mireles, brother Carlos Lopez and daughter-in-law Marye Thomas Vega.
She is survived by her loving children Hector Vega, Jr., Patricia Ann Navarro (Luis), Anthony Vega (Denise), her grandchildren Christina Vega Patterson (Ryan), Grant Vega, Anthony Josef Vega, Jennifer, Cathryn and Laura Navarro, and great grandchildren Rowan and Lina Patterson. She is also survived by her sister Felicitas “Licha” Carrasco along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lucy was born in El Paso, Texas on December 23, 1931. She was a lifelong member and volunteer of the Catholic Church. She was retired from YISD, where she worked as an assistant librarian. After retiring Lucy enjoyed her part time job at El Paso Community College where she work every semester with registration. She delighted in the time she spent with her family and babysitting her grandbabies. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, attending mass and enjoyed playing her piano daily. Lucy had her prayer list whom she prayed for every day. She was a Tuesday regular at Pebble Creek Nursing Home where she and her sisters would go to sing and pray the rosary with the residents. Lucy was also very giving of her time; if anyone needed to go to the grocery store or doctor, she was your ride. Her loving and gentle soul will truly be missed by all.
Pallbearers are Hector Vega, Jr., Grant Vega, Anthony Vega, Anthony Josef Vega, Luis Navarro and Ryan Patterson. Honorary Pallbearer is Rowan Patterson. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, El Paso Chapter. A special thank you to Dr. Aloba and the caregivers from CIMA Hospice.
Visitation -Sunday, February 26-5 to 9pm- vigil -7pm -Martin Funeral Home Central.
Funeral Mass- Monday, February 27- 9:15am- Guardian Angel Catholic Church.
Burial-Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
