Matilde R. Colunga

Our mother, Matilde R. Colunga, age 89, was our rock and a warrior to the very end. Mom peacefully earned her wings to Heaven on November 28, 2023, where she was reunited with our father, Juan A. Colunga. Mom was known as "Mati" or "Tillie" by friends and family. She was surrounded by family as she went to her reward following a short, courageous battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Mom loved and lived every moment she was given, always graceful, until God called her home.

Mom was a devoted Catholic who was known by many titles: loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend throughout her life. Owing to her devoted faith and wisdom, Mom taught life and spiritual lessons through her words and actions. She had a playful, charismatic sense of humor that captivated everyone. Mom's motto was, "If you fail, get up and try again until you succeed.” Anything Mom put her mind to, she would accomplish. She went to night school to learn English, completed GED classes, and even learned how to drive when she was in her 70s. Mom would tell her grandchildren, "If I did it, you can do it better." She always sacrificed her needs and desires for the good of her family.

As a woman of prayer and service, she instilled those same values in her children and grandchildren. Her spirituality and religious contributions were not just limited to our mother church, Saint Patrick's Cathedral. As a living example of a devoted Catholic and a strong woman of faith, she found joy and love in being a faithful, active Catholic.

Mom was a member of Saint Patrick's Cathedral for more than 55 years. She was a member of Las Guadalupanas Society, and a founder of the Spanish choir, the hospitality group, and a Eucharist minister. Mom and Dad started the Evangelization Group in Spanish under the direction of Monsigñor David Fierro, and also founded a charity group in Juarez, Mexico. Mom was involved and active at Guadalupe church as well as at Tepeyac. She enjoyed being an ACTS Retreat sister.

Mom found joy in a life of service to God, community, family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers. Her hobbies included gardening, water aerobics, socializing with her friends at the senior citizen center, traveling with our father on various pilgrimage trips, talking with her grand and great-grandchildren on the phone, watching her game shows on TV, and, most importantly, tuning into EWTN to pray the Divine Mercy and Rosary from Lourdes, France on a daily basis. The treasure and legacy that mom left us was to pray the Rosary every day and night and love Jesus and our Virgin Mary. She and Dad raised us to say our morning and evening prayers, including the Psalms that they taught us.

Mom is survived by her children: Sylvia Martinez (Ernesto), Thelma Mota (Genaro), Jesus F. Colunga (Julia), Sandra Colunga-Austin (Alejandro), and Laura Colunga; her grandchildren, Genaro Mota III (Jennifer), Ernesto Martinez Jr. (Kelly), Antonio Mota (Candance), Valerie Vasquez (Mikey), Andrea Colunga, Julianna Colunga, J. Alexander Austin, and Ian Daniel Austin; her great-grandchildren: Madeline, Camilia, and Genero Mota IV, Aria and Evan Martinez, Antonio Mota II, and Emery and Nathan Vasquez. She is also survived by her sisters: Rita Fematt, Mona Rodriguez, and Leticia Cisneros.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of El Paso for their compassionate care of our mother, as well as her primary care physician, Dr. Alnajjar.

• Visitation for Matilde R. Colunga will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Ave., El Paso, Texas 79903.

• Funeral Mass will follow on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at 1118 N Mesa, El Paso, Texas 79902.

• Committal service to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery at 401 S. Zaragoza, El Paso, Texas 79907.

Nuestra madre, Matilde R. Colunga, 89 años, fue nuestra roca y guerrera hasta el final. Mamá se ganó pacíficamente sus alas al Cielo el 28 de noviembre de 2023, donde se reencontró con nuestro padre, Juan A. Colunga. Amigos y familiares conocían a mamá como "Mati" o "Tillie". Estaba rodeada de su familia mientras fue hacia su recompensa despues de una breve y valiente batalla contra el linfoma non Hodgkin. Mamá amó y vivió cada momento que le fue regalado, siempre con gracia, hasta que Dios la llamó a casa.

Mamá era una católica devota conocida por muchos títulos: amorosa esposa, hija, hermana, tía, suegra, abuela, bisabuela y amiga durante toda su vida. Debido a su devota fe y sabiduría, mamá enseñó lecciones espirituales y de vida a través de sus palabras y acciones. Tenía un sentido del humor juguetón y carismático que cautivaba a todos. El lema de mamá era: "Si fallas, levántate y vuelve a intentarlo hasta que lo logres". Todo lo que mamá se proponía, lo lograba. Fue a la escuela nocturna para aprender inglés, completó clases de GED e incluso aprendió a conducir cuando tenía 70 años. Mamá les decía a sus nietos: "Si yo lo hice, ustedes puedo hacerlo mejor." Ella siempre sacrificó sus necesidades y deseos por el bien de su familia.

Como mujer de oración y servicio, inculcó esos mismos valores a sus hijos y nietos. Su espiritualidad y contribuciones religiosas no se limitaron solo a nuestra iglesia madre, la Catedral de San Patricio. Como ejemplo vivo de católica devota y mujer de fe fuerte, encontró alegría y amor en ser una católica fiel y activa.

Mamá fue miembro de la Catedral de San Patricio durante más de 55 años. Fue miembro de la Sociedad Las Guadalupanas, fundadora del coro español, del grupo de hospitalidad y ministra de Eucaristía. Mamá y papá iniciaron el Grupo de Evangelización en español bajo la dirección de Monseñor David Fierro, y también fundaron un grupo de caridad en Juárez, México. Mamá estuvo involucrada y activa en la iglesia de Guadalupe así como en Tepeyac. Le gustaba ser hermana del retiro ACTS.

Mamá encontró alegría en una vida de servicio a Dios, la comunidad, la familia, los amigos, los vecinos e incluso los extraños. Sus pasatiempos incluían la jardinería, los aeróbicos acuáticos, socializar con sus amigos en el centro para personas mayores, viajar con nuestro padre en varios viajes de peregrinación, hablar con sus nietos y bisnietos por teléfono, ver sus programas de juegos en la televisión y, lo más importante, sintonizando EWTN para rezar la Divina Misericordia y el Rosario desde Lourdes, Francia diariamente. El tesoro y legado que nos dejó mamá fue rezar el Rosario todos los días y noches y amar a Jesús y a nuestra Virgen María. Ella y papá nos criaron para decir nuestras oraciones matutinas y vespertinas, incluidos los Salmos que nos enseñaron.

A mamá le sobreviven sus hijos: Sylvia Martinez (Ernesto), Thelma Mota (Genaro), Jesus F. Colunga (Julia), Sandra Colunga-Austin (Alejandro) y Laura Colunga; sus nietos, Genaro Mota III (Jennifer), Ernesto Martinez Jr. (Kelly), Antonio Mota (Candance), Valerie Vasquez (Mikey), Andrea Colunga, Julianna Colunga, J. Alexander Austin e Ian Daniel Austin; sus bisnietos: Madeline, Camilia y Genero Mota IV, Aria y Evan Martinez, Antonio Mota II y Emery y Nathan Vasquez. También le sobreviven sus hermanas: Rita Fematt, Mona Rodríguez y Leticia Cisneros.
