With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Eli Chavez Sr., who departed this life peacefully at home on October 1, 2025, surrounded by his adoring family.
Robert was a man of strength, kindness, and quiet wisdom — a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, police officer, veteran, real estate broker/owner and lifelong public servant. Born in Alamogordo, NM, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge, before continuing his service to his community as a dedicated officer with the El Paso Police Department. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant, earning the respect of his peers and the gratitude of the city he served. Upon his retirement from the police department, he was the founding broker and owner of Southwest Properties for 25 years.
Outside of his uniform, Robert lived a life full of movement, meaning, and love. He was deeply connected to nature and always happiest under open skies — hiking, walking, and exploring mountain roads, rivers, and quiet communities, especially during cherished family trips to Ruidoso, New Mexico. A true outdoorsman at heart, he found peace and joy in the simple beauty of the world around him.
He had a deep love for reading, especially history, and a creative spirit that led him to build, tinker, and bring ideas to life. He was also a gifted storyteller — spinning unforgettable tales for his children, often completely off the cuff, with warmth, humor, and imagination that made every word feel like magic. He had a passion for photography and loved exploring antique shops in search of hidden treasures. His entrepreneurial spirit brought excitement and creativity to his life, and his family cherished the many ventures and experiences they shared alongside him. But above all, Robert’s greatest joy was his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Yolanda S. Chavez “Chewese”of 65 years, whose homemade enchiladas were his favorite comfort and whose love was the foundation of his life. Together, they raised a close-knit, loving family that brought him immense pride: his three children — Robert Chavez Jr. (wife Rosa Chavez), Rebecca Ann Chavez-Becker (husband Randal Becker), and Joe David Chavez (wife, Nancy Baca) — along with 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry his legacy in their hearts.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 7, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Ave., El Paso, Texas, 79903. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 8, at 12:30 PM at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 12200 Vista Del Sol Dr., El Paso, Texas, 79936, followed by burial with police and military honors at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
Robert’s life was a beautiful journey of service, love, laughter, and wonder. He loved dancing with his beloved wife throughout his life. His stories, strength, and gentle presence will be missed dearly but remembered always.
