Our beloved Norman Joseph Kirk was born on January 28, 1947, in Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania. He passed away on August 5, 2020, in Estes Park, Colorado, at 73, following a courageously fought battle with cancer. Norman is survived by his two loving sons, Justin (Heather) and Jeremy Kirk; brother, Calvin Kirk; and nieces, Heather Manes and Dawn Zimmer.
Norman is preceded into death by his parents, Joseph and Florence Kirk; sister, Kathleen Manes; and brother, Lawrence Kirk.
Norman spent his early childhood years in Holland Township, New Jersey and graduated from Delaware Valley Regional High School. Norman continued his higher education at Trenton State College, earning a bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1974.
Amid Norman's college years, he served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star for valor. Upon graduation, Norman worked with troubled youth at the Hunterdon County Medical Center Psychiatric Department. He later pursued a career in the field of civil engineering, owning his business conducting soils and wetland delineations and general land surveying.
Upon pursuing his dreams of moving west and relocating to Colorado, Norman worked as a park ranger for the National Park Service (NPS) at both Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Parks. He had a passion for the outdoors and love for nature. He was exemplary in his commitment to serving the park, and a loyal team member to his fellow rangers.
Norman was a loving and selflessly devoted father to his two sons. He was a teacher, a coach, and in many ways, a trailblazer, but most importantly, he tirelessly supported his family. A natural at photography, he always captured nature's beauty for others to enjoy. Norman had an adventurous spirit, whether it was rock climbing at Ralph Stover State Park or camping in Arches National Park, to attempting the summit of Mt. Rainier with his two sons, he always had a yearning to travel and explore. Norman will be remembered as an adventurer; for his kindness, humility, and calm demeanor; his words of wisdom, thoughtful gifts, and special hand-written notes of encouragement. To know him was to love him and his bright light will be sorely missed.
