

Victor L. Fisher, Jr. passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Deaconess Hospital. He was born in Evansville in 1927 to Victor L. Fisher, Sr. and Estella (Weintraut) Fisher. They were school teachers and his father taught for many years at the original Central High School in downtown Evansville. After graduating from F.J. Reitz High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army and attended Officer’s Candidate School and was commissioned Lieutenant. He was discharged from the Army at the end of World War II and enrolled in Evansville College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He started teaching at Culver Elementary School in 1949. While teaching he continued his education and received a Master of Science degree and a Doctorate of Education degree from Indiana University. In 1950, requiring a leave from teaching, the U.S. Army recalled him to active duty and he served in Japan and Korea until May of 1952. He became Principal of Henry Reis School in 1960 and continued as Principal of Henry Reis and also Evans School in 1969. He was also appointed Superintendent of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation by the School Board in 1973. He retired as Superintendent in 1986. He also worked as a consultant for NEOLA, a corporation that wrote School Board Policies and Administrative Guidelines and he consulted with 85 Indiana School Corporations on their policies and guidelines. He served on many civic and professional boards including Boards of the Welborn Hospital and the Evansville Rescue Mission. He was a member of the Turning Pointe United Methodist Church. His wife, Ruth, of 65 years survives him. He is survived by daughter, Deborah Baumgartner and her husband Scott, of Westerville, Ohio; son, Thomas L. Fisher and his wife, Deborah of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, Dale V. Fisher of Francisco, IN; sisters, Charmenz Guagenti of Newburgh, IN, Nora Patterson and Ann Fisher of Evansville; grandchildren, Amy Bryant, Timothy Baumgartner, Thomas Jr., Patrick, Christopher, Scotty and Katy Fisher. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Cindy Fisher. Private services will be held at the Pierre Funeral Home with no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jacob’s Village or the Evansville Rescue Mission.
