

Walter was born on a farm in Hartford, AK, August 22, 1916, the son of Cyrus and Clara Smith. He died January 27, 2012 in Everett, WA. He attended Business College in Ft. Smith Arkansas and then moved to Everett in 1936. In 1937 he joined the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1941. He re-enlisted in the Navy in 1943 during WWII and was in the South Pacific until the war ended.
In 1942, Walter married Ellen Krogh. They were blessed with two daughters. After the war, Walter worked 28 years at the H. O. Seiffert Company and then established and operated the C. Walter Smith Roofing Co. with Ellen. During his life, Walter served on the Mukilteo School Board, served as President of the Washington State Roofing Contractors Association and was trustee and moderator at Bethel Baptist Church. He enjoyed helping family members in practical ways – through carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and, of course, roofing. He was often working on projects at Bethel Baptist Church. Walter loved his church and his family and they loved him. He will be deeply missed.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Ellen, sister Mary Smith, sister/brother-in-law Marjory and Otto Stedenfeld, and brother-in-law Lawrence Krogh. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Elaine and Stewart Dow of Snohomish, and Carolyn and Rick Weakley of Tacoma, sister-in-law Naydene Krogh, grandchildren Philip Dow (Catherine) of Cambridge, England, Christy (Brian) Hoke of Copenhagen, Denmark, Katharine Dow of Kabul, Afghanistan, Heidi Weakley of Tacoma, Dan Weakley of Tacoma, his great grandsons Sean and Stuart of Copenhagen and great granddaughters Emma and Sophia of Cambridge, his nieces and nephews Richard (Sherry) Krogh, Janet (Jerry) Berryman, Brenda (Jim) Cudney and Brad (Nancy) Stedenfeld, and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Reception following. Visitation is Friday, January 3, from 4-8. Private interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 2627 Hoyt Ave., Everett, 98201.
