He was born in the small town of Melvin, Texas, into a close-knit family to his parents, Pedro and Anastacia Costilla. He was one of 13 children, growing up with nine brothers and four sisters.
Gilbert attended high school in Melvin, where he excelled in football, earning letters at two separate schools for his outstanding athleticism. Following his passion and dedication to his nation, he served in the Air Force, which eventually led him to Washington State, a place he would call home for the rest of his life.
In 1964, Gilberts life took a joyful turn when he met his beloved wife, Juanita. The couple married in 1967 and shared a bond characterized by love, faith, and mutual respect. Together, they raised three wonderful children: two sons and a daughter.
Driven by a desire for self-improvement and setting an example for his family, Gilbert embarked on employment with The Boeing Company, Scott Paper Company and Weyerhaeuser Company all before attending Everett Community College and then further, continuing his education at the University of Washington. His quest led him on a long and fulfilling career with the Department of Social and Health Services in Everett, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service.
He was deeply committed to his faith and was a faithful parishioner at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, where he actively participated in community life. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional career as he was also an active member of the G.I. Forum and the American Legion in Everett, Washington.
Gilbert's legacy is defined by his devotion to family, his faith, and community service. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and strength.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Juanita, their children, Gavin and (Christi), Michael and (Trisha) and Stacia and four grandchildren: Ava, Miguel, Miles, and Carson, and a host of cherished relatives and friends. While his departure leaves a void, his spirit and values will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace.
