Karen Ann (Sanford) Ledoux
2/01/1942 – 3/26/2013
After 49 loving years of marriage, Karen and Vic Ledoux each passed away of independent causes within days of each other in late March, 2013, with their children by their sides. Karen and Vic led a wonderful life together and it is only fitting that they would pass away so close together.
Vic was born in Central Village, Connecticut on February 9, 1939 to Emile and Marie Ledoux. His birth made the town’s newspapers as he was born with his first two teeth! He was raised by his parents in Massachusetts along with his sister, Claire. While growing up, playing baseball was his biggest passion. After graduating from St. Mary’s Central Catholic High School, he attended Worcester Junior College studying mathematics. He then joined the US Air Force, where he became a Navigator and was stationed at McChord AFB, in Tacoma, WA.
Karen was born on February 1, 1942 in Sumner, Washington, to Melvin and Jeneva Sanford. Karen was very active Girl Scouts and was president of the Girls’ Club at Sumner High School. After graduation, Karen attended the Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing. She was on her way to becoming a registered nurse when she and Vic met.
Vic and Karen met on a blind date in late 1963. They had actually met each other casually the week before their setup, so their matchmakers were quite surprised when Vic gave Karen a big kiss after they were “introduced!” Vic and Karen both had a healthy sense of humor, ever since this special beginning. They were married on February 8, 1964.
They first settled in Tacoma, WA, where their welcomed their first child David in 1965 followed by daughter Nancy in 1968. Career opportunities found them relocating to Yakima, WA from 1971-1974, then to Portland, Oregon from 1974-1988 and back to the Seattle area from 1988 to present.
Karen led a distinguished career in the health care industry, starting out as a Registered Nurse working in several different hospital settings. In the early 1980’s, she started a new career path for the state of Oregon as a nursing consultant. She eventually struck out on her own, founding Progressive Case Management, a very successful occupational health firm.
After Vic’s honorable discharge from the US Air Force, he went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree at Pacific Lutheran University, later going into the insurance industry where he became a successful executive.
Their lives were full of many happy memories together following their passions of strong family ties, successful careers and involvement in many social activities, clubs and charitable organizations. This included leading the Portland Timbers Booster Club in the 1970’s, serving on several church councils, taking family camping trips, and becoming avid power boaters enjoying the Puget Sound region. Karen and Vic whole-heartedly supported their children and their grandchildren at every opportunity. They have left a wonderful legacy of positivity and living life to the fullest each and every day.
They are survived by son David Ledoux(Megan), daughter Nancy Fulmer (Tobyn), Vic’s sister Claire O’Rourke (Bill), grandchildren Briana, Grace, and Patrick Ledoux, Daniel and Benjamin Fulmer, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held in celebration of their lives at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Everett Washington on Saturday, April 20, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and/or the Heart to Heart program at Providence Hospital in Everett, WA.
