Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Donna (Spencer) Newport, brothers Dennis and Steve Newport, and his parents, Vernon G. Newport and Joan D. Coates. He is survived by his son, Matthew W. Newport (Miranda), and daughter, Brenda R. Sturgis (Matt). He was a cherished grandfather to Aaron Newport and Clayton Sturgis, Noah Dingman, Hannah Sturgis and Ethan Sturgis. He was also an honorary grandfather to Rebekah Dellinger, and Josiah and Elijah Rider, and honorary great grandfather to Titus Dellinger.
Bill grew up in Everett, WA where he graduated from Cascade High school in 1969 and later attended Everett Community College, earning a degree in computer programming before it was cool. He dedicated many years to his career in that field, eventually retiring from Regence Blue Shield.
Bill's wife, Donna, was his classmate at Cascade High School, although it wasn't until a couple years later that they were introduced, and eventually married in 1974. They settled down in Everett and later on in Lynnwood where they owned their home for may years. In the early 80's, Bill moved his family to Juneau, Alaska, where he went through a serious fishing phase, and was even lost at sea! After that, they moved back inland to Everett right next door to his brother, Dennis. These were some of the happiest years of Bill's life, spending time with his brother who was also his best friend. Every Friday night was dedicated to the speedway where Dennis would drive #99 and Bill, the cameraman, would record every race.
The consummate sports junkie, Bill grew up playing basketball and little league baseball. He proudly rooted for all the Seattle home teams, and on most days could be found parked in his recliner watching game after game. He passed this love on to his children and always looked forward to their annual fantasy football league and NCAA Tournament bracket competitions.
Bill loved Whidbey Island! it was his favorite place to hike and retell stories of his wild days climbing towers on mountaintops. He was always up for an adventure, and whether it was wandering the bunkers at Fort Casey, or recruiting people to walk the bridge at Deception Pass. He loved being with the people he loved in the places he loved. And that included the Woodland Park Zoo, where he probably should've been given a job as a tour guide because he went so often!
Bill's heart was as big as he was tall (6'6") and as extensive as his movie collection. Fun-loving, loyal, and always willing to lend a hand, if Bill was there, he was cheering you on.
A combined memorial service for Bill and his late wife, Donna, will be held on what would have been their 50th wedding anniversary, Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 1 PM at Floral Hills Cemetery, 10934 N Creek Drive, Lynnwood, WA 98036.
