Clara Mae Summers was born and raised in Los Molinos, CA. She graduated from Los Molinos Highschool in 1943 and moved to Sacramento, CA, where she worked at McClellan Air Force Base and built fighter and bomber airplanes during the remainder of WWII. Clara met Lester Carmichael on New Years Eve 1944 in Sacramento while he was on leave from the Navy. On November 24, 1945 they were married in Sacramento after his service in the Navy ended. Lester got a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad and they moved to Norden, CA and lived in a house next to the railroad tracks and snow sheds. Three sons were born between 1947 and 1950. The family then moved to Sacramento in 1952. They built a house on Eastern Avenue which they moved into in 1953. They then had 2 daughters and 1 son between 1953 to 1960. Clara worked at Weinstock's Department Store for years until she retired. Lester and Clara were married 55 years and traveled extensively across the United States during their retirement years together. Clara enjoyed bowling, bunco, scrabble and reading. She lived a long and active life and was very involved with family and friends. She was a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
She is survived by her 4 sons and 1 daughter. Bruce, Stephen (Karen), William, Carol Soares (Frank) and James Dexter, 3 granddaughters, 2 step-grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Lester (2001), Daughter, Patricia (1978) and grandson, Adam Soares (2008). On Tuesday March 7, 2023 there will be a visitation for Clara from 11am to 12pm and a service at 1pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Park and Mortuary. The service will be followed by as burial at Calvary Cemetery at 2pm after of which will be an informal gathering at 6919 Vera Cruz Court in Citrus Heights.
