Born 7/11/1917 in the small farming town of Hollis, Oklahoma to Nancy Ann Sophie and James McGrady Gamble, Duard was the youngest of three boys (Roy and Roger both deceased), 2 half brothers and 1 half sister, (John, Claude and May, also deceased).
An active kid in a small town, he worked in his Dad’s Piggly Wiggley store, played high school football and graduated from Hollis High in 1936 where he was named Class Poet with a long narrative poem in his Yearbook.
In 1937, in the first of many bold moves, Duard set out for California, settling in Bakersfield, CA. The first job he could find was delivering Dr. Pepper in San Louis Obispo where he met and married Ruth Mary Miller (deceased). After serving a year in the US Army they moved back to Bakersfield, had three sons and Duard found his first serious job. As fate would have it, he landed a job with the Kern County Land Co. as a surveyor for land development, a skill that would not only become his profession but would define his life: he loved to develop property.
In 1946, in a second bold move, Duard bought a ranch on the remote Pit River in northern CA, starting a life long quest to find that “perfect, great” place to live and raise 3 boys. They moved from Modoc County CA to Moses Lake, WA where his surveying skills were in great demand then on to the tiny town of Albion, ID where a new Christian College beckoned. Duard next moved his family back south to Redding, CA where opportunity knocked and his boys finished high school and went off to college. He then headed further south to the Sacramento area and he didn’t stop looking until he discovered the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mts.. There he finally built a house, married his lovely (surviving) wife Glenna Burlingame Gamble and settled down for good. The rolling stone had finally come to rest on a hill with a beautiful view in El Dorado Hills, CA.
In addition to his wife, Glenna, Duard is survived by his 3 sons: Michael Miller Gamble (David), Stephen Mark Gamble (Joanie) and Duncan David Gamble (Jane) - 5 grandchildren (Mark, Duncan Jr., Lilah, Samuel and Grady Gamble), one step grandson, (Michael McGowan) three great grand kids, (Lilah Rose, Mikey and Ayla), 2 nephews (Jim and John Gamble) and 1 great nephew (Evan).
He is also survived by Glenna’s 3 surviving children [Phil Burlingame (Lanele), Susan Blair (Rod) and Michael Burlingame (Janie)] and their combined 13 children and “almost 14” great grand children.
Services will be held on Wed., June 4th at 12:00PM at the Mt Vernon Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to your favorite charity.
May he rest in peace.
