Jim was born in Riverside, California on February 5, 1946 to Charles R. and Evalena F. Love. He grew up in the Sacramento area, where he graduated from Grant Union High School and Sacramento State College with a degree in electrical engineering.
Jim’s family came to Town and Country Lutheran Church in 1957, where he was a member for the next sixty years. Jim attended the 7th and 8th grades at Town & Country school, went through scouting to become an Eagle Scout and Explorer, was confirmed, and held numerous offices in his adult life, the most prominent of which was being head of Plant and Property for years. He met the love of his life, Donna, when she came to Town and Country at age ten, and they were later married there in 1975.
Jim worked for Wismer and Becker (which later became Atkinson Construction) for 23 years, mainly working in and managing the light rail division. He earned their “Top Cat Award” during two of those years for his outstanding work and achievements. When Atkinson closed in the late eighties, Jim with his wife, Donna, and partners, Ken and Cindy Zack, started their own business, Sigcon, Inc., which assembled and provided signaling and control systems for numerous light rail projects, mainly in San Diego, California, and Portland, Oregon. Sigcon became well known and respected in the industry. After closing Sigcon, Jim worked for several years as a consultant until illness made him unable to do so.
Jim was especially fond of his children and grandchildren and they of him. It was important to him that they first knew the Lord and cared for other people. After that was taken care of, he made sure that they all knew how to get the best out of trips to Disneyland and Disney World. He was always willing to help each one of them with whatever they needed help with, regardless of what he was doing. I guess that went for anyone who needed his help. He was extremely smart and handy. He could fix anything and answer almost any question. As a close family friend recently said, “Jim was a man of great integrity. When he spoke, people listened.” Also, when he made a commitment, he was committed. Yet he was a humble man, not asking for much for himself.
Jim is survived by his wife of 42 years, Donna; daughter, Cheree; son, Tommy (Nicole); granddaughters, Tarah (Tyler) and Jessie (Will); grandsons, TJ and Konr; great grandchildren, Emery, Aven, Reagan, and Daniella; brother, Richard (Judy); sister-in-law, Carolann, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
We will miss our dear sweet husband, dad, GPA , Papa, brother, and friend, but we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with Christ. Jim will have the best new year he has ever had because he knew and trusted in Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jim would say with us, “to God be the Glory!!!!”
A memorial service for Jim will be held at Town and Country Lutheran Church, 4049 Marconi Avenue, Sacramento, California 95821, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in Jim’s memory to the Town and Country Lutheran Church Plant and Property Fund.
