
After High School graduation, she moved to Schenectady, New York to work for General Electric. She was able to get a job in the X-ray lab. The next year, she was transferred to the Metallographic Lab. She was the first woman to be hired for that position. While she was working there, she met a young Engineer, Marion “Cliff” Rowland. They dated and later married in 1947 beginning a loving marriage of 56 years. They moved into a house in Scotia, New York and in 1951, their son Richard was born. Cliff was transferred to the California G.E. Atomic Division in 1956, so the family moved to San Jose, California. The family gained a daughter-in-law in 1973 when Richard married Elise. Joyce became a grandmother when Janelle was born in 1977 and Julie in 1979. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff, in 2003. She later became a great grandmother with the birth of Ryan in 2008 and Adam in 2012.
For the last 8 years of her life, she lived in the Sacramento area to be near her family. She continued her interests in card games, bridge, bingo, and oil painting for as long as she could. She passed away on July 12, 2014. Joyce is remembered for her hospitality, generosity, and love of art.
