December 28, 1934 – June 3, 2016
Dr. Lloyd Maurice McCullough Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great -grandfather, closed his eyes on June 3, 2016 while at home and entered into eternal sleep with God.
He was born in Fort Worth, Texas at Saint Joseph’s Hospital on December 28, 1934. His parents were Georgia Mae Washington McCullough and William Henry McCullough. He has two siblings, Mary Jo Tuggle of Los Angeles, CA and William Henry McCullough Jr., of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dr. McCullough attended James E. Gwinn Elementary and Junior High School, and I M Terrell High School in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Prairie View A&M with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Science, in 1956. After graduation he was drafted into the Navy and served aboard the USS Housley Powell DD 686 from 1956 to 1960.
Dr. McCullough received his Doctorate Degree in Vocational Education from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1974. He was a nationally recognized educational consultant and worked for California State Department of Education, the Los Angeles County Department of Education, the Compton Unified School District, and retired from the California State Department of Corrections in 1994. During his career he developed master degree programs for international students through the University of San Francisco, and sat on the board of the National Association of Vocational Education (NAVE). While on the board, he had the honor of introducing Mrs. Hillary Rodhman Clinton as Key Note Speaker at the national convention in Washington D.C., just prior to Bill Clinton announcing his presidential campaign. After retirement he spent the next 10 years teaching math to junior high student in the Grant Unified School District.
Dr. McCullough loved to travel especially with his wife and best friends Willie and Barbara Hobbs. The group of four would often travel abroad and throughout the United States. He was excited and loved hanging out with his grandchildren, teaching them “math facts”, how to ride a bike, and watching them swim in the back yard during the summers.
Over the last 14 years you could find him on the tennis courts watching his grandchildren play and talking to parents, coaches, and other players. He loved music, playing the drums, watching the history channel, and helping others. He always taught and emphasized the importance of getting an education. He believed that education contributes to the development of strong character and one’s intellect.
Dr. McCullough was a beloved father of two sons, Lloyd McCullough Jr. and Lee McCullough (Dawn McCullough) of Los Angeles, CA, while married to Annie McCullough. He later married Helen McCullough and they have two daughters, Dietra Fielder (Michael Fielder), and Lerryn McCullough.
He loved and adored all of his grandchildren (Cameron Smith, Cortne Mitchell, LeAnn McCullough, Lailah McCullough, Eirene Granville, Mauriana Stallworth, Markell Stallworth, Jerimyah Mitchell, and Niamyah Mitchell), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family.
At his death Dr. McCullough’s family represented four generations of college graduates, much to his delight and personal effort. The family is establishing the Dr. Lloyd McCullough Sr. Scholarship Fund in his honor.
