

Bill was born on July 26, 1923 in West Point, Kentucky. He entered Heaven on May 30, 2011. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty and his second wife Ellie. Bill was also preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Verna Applegate and siblings Augusta, Anna, James, Lucille, and David. He has a niece, Denise Mudd and a nephew James Lee (Betty) Applegate and family still residing in Kentucky as well as some great nieces, great nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind his sister-in-laws Joann (Richard) Mondon and Nan Bowman and their families and brother-in-law Clyde (Ruth) Bowman and his family as well as many other members from both Betty and Ellie’s family.
He is survived by six children, fourteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren:
Loving daughter Mary and her four sons: William Carlson, Edward Carlson and his son Mathew, T.J Carlson (Terra) and Donny Andrews. Bill’s passing is also felt by her three eldest sons’ father Garry Carlson and her youngest son’s father Steve Andrews.
Loving son William “Jeff” and his wife Jamie, their daughter Lindsay and her husband Martin Surratt and their daughter Deanna Lynn.
Loving daughter Susan “Sue” and her husband Alfred Oettle and their two daughters Sarah and Jessica and her husband Brett Perkins.
Loving son Greg Applegate and his wife Debbie, their daughter Cassie and her husband Matthew Williams, and their son Caleb and his wife Shawna Applegate and their two children Liam and Amelia.
Loving daughter Janet and her husband Daniel Moncado and their two sons Derick and Jordan.
Loving son James and his wife Kelly, son Landon, and step-daughters Amber and Makayla.
Bill served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He graduated from Chico State University in 1947. While at Chico State, Bill courted Betty. The two married June 27, 1947 and moved to Sacramento in 1948. Bill served as a public school Principal for over 35 years in the Sacramento area. He was also a Master Gardener, a Board Member of Carmichael Parks and Recreation Department, and was involved in many community organization and activities. Bill was an active member of the CTA (California Teachers’ Association). He also managed his son Greg’s little league team while his eldest son Jeff coached for three consecutive winning seasons. Bill wrote several articles which were published in various gardening magazines including Reminisce Magazine.
Bill touched innumerable lives through his career as an educator. He was a loving and caring son, brother, father, husband, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Bill will never be forgotten as he will live on in our hearts and all our shared memories.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 18th, at 2:00 at Eskaton, 3939 Walnut Ave. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society.
