Willie Alfred Sloan, Sr., was born on January 7, 1935, to Leroy Henry Sloan and Alberta Ponder Sloan in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the brother of Claudia, Ophelia, Ruth, Zipporia and one brother Leroy Henry, all who preceded him in death. The family moved to Michigan when Willie was 8 years old. Unbeknownst to Willie that while he was attending Sidney D. Miller Jr. High and High School in Detroit, Michigan he would soon meet and marry his forever life partner and soulmate.
Willie met Josephine Lorraine Daniels Sloan (deceased) at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Detroit, Michigan, when he was 16 years old and Josephine was 14 years old. When Willie turned 17, he enlisted into the United States Air Force. When he completed basic training, he returned to Detroit where he and Josephine decided they wanted to get married and spend the rest of their lives together. Of course, Josephine had to get her parents’ permission (she did) and they were married in Clovis, New Mexico while being stationed at Clovis Air Force Base on November 12, 1952.
Willie and Josephine led a very active, energetic, and exciting life. Traveling around the world; Turkey, United Kingdom - England, Vietnam, and a host of other places. Willie's wife Josephine - whom Willie often referred to as "FOX" was a community ambassador. Throughout their military travels their home was open to just about everyone that Josephine and Willie met; Temporary Duty military service personnel, families that had newly arrived at the bases they were stationed and GIs who were away from home. No one was left out of the energy or their family - as often their (Willie and Josephine) friends became our extended family of cousins, aunts, and uncles. Although Willie had a quiet demeanor and a contagious laugh, he found amazing joy and an abundance of laughter in his life with Josephine and his children. Willie also found great enjoyment golfing. Earning an award as Club Champion in 2000 for the 45er Golf Club.
Willie retired from the United States Air Force November 1981 as a Chief Master Sergeant with 29 plus years of Service settling down with Josephine in Rancho Cordova, California.
Impactful upon all of their lives was Willie's wisdom, integrity, importance of family, practicality, and his support (physically, mentally, emotionally, and sometimes financially). Willie provided his entire family with a foundation of love that truly came from his heart. Born to Willie and Josephine's God inspired marital union were five children: Darnelda Inez Sloan-Trower, Wilsetta Lorraine Sloan-McClain (Richard), Charlotte Marie Sloan-Cowser, Diane Eunice Sloan and Willie Alfred Sloan, Jr.
To honor his memory, in addition to the children are George Walker – who has been a constant support and source for Charlotte, Kenneth Bolds who uplifts and supports Diane, three brother in-laws, 12 grandchildren (1 - Porschia preceded in him death), 21 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
