August 21, 1942 – February 17, 2025
Wynn Cook lived a life of purpose, passion, and dedication—whether in his career, his hobbies, or the love he had for his family. Born on August 21, 1942, in Bismarck, North Dakota, Wynn moved with his family to Santa Maria, California, as a child. It was there that he developed his lifelong love for golf, including a particularly special victory at the Santa Maria Country Club tournament alongside his father, Paul Cook.
Wynn’s journey was one of relentless curiosity and commitment, extending to his education, military service, and career. Before attending college, he served as a Public Information Officer in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966, using his communication skills to keep service members and the public informed. After completing his military service, he enrolled at San Jose State University, where he quickly made his mark in journalism, serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Spartan Daily student newspaper.
Following graduation, Wynn began a distinguished career in media and communications. He worked as the Sports Information Director at San Jose State University, a role he truly enjoyed, combining his love of sports with his talent for storytelling. He then went on to serve as the National Advertising Representative for the San Jose Mercury News, strengthening key advertising relationships for one of California’s largest newspapers. Later, he became the Western Regional Manager for Microwave Journal, a position he held for 20 years, where he was respected for his industry knowledge, professionalism, and ability to foster lasting connections.
Beyond his professional achievements, Wynn was a man of many interests and talents. He had a passion for classic cars, always appreciating the craftsmanship and nostalgia they represented. He also loved model railroads and spent countless hours designing and building a fully developed model railway in his garage—a testament to his patience, creativity, and love of craftsmanship.
Above all, Wynn was a devoted family man. He shared 52 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Yvonne Cook, before her passing. Wynn was not only a loving husband but also a steadfast supporter of Yvonne’s 23-year service as a school board trustee, standing by her side as she dedicated herself to public education. His unwavering encouragement and pride in her work reflected the deep partnership they shared.
He is preceded in death by Yvonne, as well as his parents, Paul and Virginia Cook. He is survived by his children, Avery Cook and Heather McGowan, and his six grandchildren, Jessica, Avery Jr., Veronica, Hayden, Lily, and Brody, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Wynn was a dedicated father, never missing his children’s sports games, school activities, or important milestones. That same commitment carried over into his role as a grandfather, where he could
often be found on the sidelines cheering on his grandchildren, supporting their passions just as he had for his own children.
Wynn was a storyteller, a mentor, and a man who could light up a conversation with his humor and insight. Whether discussing the latest sports news, sharing memories of his career, admiring a classic car, or enjoying a round of golf, he had a way of making those around him feel valued and heard. His warmth, intellect, and kindness will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
