

Alberto Byington, Sr. was born in Falfurrias, Texas on April 6, 1935 to Alfredo Byington, Sr. and Annabel Cruz Byington. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Alfredo Byington, Jr., and a niece, Anita Byington.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Susana, his beloved children, Alberto Byington, Jr. of Falfurrias and San Antonio, Kristina A. Byington of Falfurrias, and Ricardo A. Byington of San Antonio; by his brother Alonzo Byington of Houston, and by many other relatives and friends.
Mr. Byington was raised and educated in Falfurrias. Upon his graduation from Falfurrias High School in 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served until 1957. After his discharge, he enrolled at Texas A&I University and received a B.S. degree in 1961 and an M.S. degree in 1965.
In 1961 Mr. Byington began a career as a South Texas educator, which lasted 48 years. During these years he served in every possible educational capacity of a school district. After teaching two short years in Falfurrias, he became principal at Encino for three years followed by becoming Brooks County ISD Director of Federal Programs, Assistant Superintendent and culminating as Brooks County ISD Superintendent in 1973 until his retirement in 1996,
After retiring from Brooks Co. ISD, he served as interim superintendent of schools in Mathis, San Diego, and Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco where a six-month appointment lasted for 7 years. He also served as a Texas Education Agency Monitor for the Driscoll ISD. Shortly after his retirement from Ben Bolt,
Mr. Byington was once again offered the position of Brooks County ISD Superintendent where he served until 2010 when he proudly retired again from the school district where he had begun his career as an educator.
During his career as an educator, Mr. Byington served on several State Committees, including the UIL State Executive Committee, UIL State Waiver Review Board Chairman, Region XIV Music Executive Committee, Texas State Teachers Association, and Texas Association of School Administrators.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as lector. He was also active in his community serving in the Brooks Co. Chamber of Commerce, Juvenile Board, and on the Kingsville Area Educators Federal Credit Union.
Throughout his long career as an educator, Mr. Byington received many honors and awards which include Educator of the Month by Texas School Business Magazine, the Molcajete Award, the most prestigious award given by the Mexican-American School Board Association, and the Tejano Service Award recognizing him as the longest serving Hispanic Superintendent in Texas.
Although he was proud of his accomplishments, he was happiest to be recognized as a devoted husband, father, and friend and an honest, generous, and kind man. For this he will always be missed by his family and friends.
Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with visitation starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Funeraria Del Angel Howard-Williams in Falfurrias.
Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church; with burial following at the Falfurrias Burial Park.
