Cynthia Cecilia Martinez Barfield departed this world for eternal rest with her Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on August 13, 1956, to Arnoldo Adalberto and Armandina Rosa Martinez, she leaves behind an enduring legacy of love and warmth that will forever resonate in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her. A devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Cynthia’s life was a tapestry woven from countless threads of compassionate interaction and enduring memories. Our world will never be the same without her radiant presence, yet we remain eternally grateful for the miracle of her life and the greatness she contributed to ours.
Cynthia’s educational journey began at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, following her high school graduation in 1974, where she pursued a degree in elementary education. Although her vocation did not take her into the classroom she once envisioned, she filled her life with the essence of a dedicated educator, considering her family and community to be her classroom. Wherever she went, Cynthia left her surroundings better than she found them, a true testament to her unwavering spirit and commitment to service.
Her professional course included important roles in various public companies, such as Exxon-Mobile, Robert Marshall Construction, and Lonestar Industries, where she performed secretarial and receptionist duties with grace and diligence. Yet, it was her later years dedicated to the family business of ranching and nurturing her children and grandchildren that defined the true measure of her success. The love, inspiration, and gratitude left behind in the memories shared with Bill and their children speak volumes of her dedication to family and companions alike.
Cynthia’s courage and dignity glowed brightly through her recent battle with cancer. Throughout her suffering, she offered solace to those around her, demonstrating an unshakeable faith that entrusted her journey into the hands of the Divine. Although the pain she endured was immense, her gentle smile and outstretched arms, always ready to offer one of her cherished hugs, continued to bring comfort and joy to her loved ones. Her untimely departure has left immense voids in the lives of family and friends—voids that reflect her exceptional ability to nurture and love. Many will fondly recall her generous spirit, symbolized by spontaneous gatherings around her table, where no one ever left hungry, and memories were created over fried backstraps and beans shared late into the night.
Cynthia’s passion for the outdoors was matched only by her affection for all creatures great and small, with a particular fondness for her dogs, working horses, and ranch cattle. She was often found on the ranch, advocating for and ensuring the wellbeing of others, proving her selflessness and commitment in every endeavor. A natural listener, she made those around her feel valued and cherished, reminding all that life is best lived in the service of others.
As we reflect upon her life, we must acknowledge the profound impact Cynthia had on each of us. She was more than just a mother; she was a mother to many, extending her kindness and nurturing spirit to her children’s friends and visitors alike. The echoes of her laughter, the warmth of her embrace, and her unwavering spirit continue to guide and inspire us even in her absence. We carry forward her legacy, embracing her wish for us to live lives filled with gratitude and love, keeping her memory alive in our hearts as she now rests peacefully in the arms of the Lord above.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Arnoldo Martinez Jr.; and niece, Maria Teresa Martinez.
Among those left to cherish her beautiful memory are her loving and devoted husband of 47 years, William “Bill” Barfield, Jr.; daughter, Clarissa (Rick) Ortega of Premont; sons, William C. (Robbie Serna) Barfield, III. and Ryan Taylor (Cheyenne Borchert) Barfield of Alice; siblings, Adela Hellen of Austin, Daniel Martinez of Kingsville, Ricardo Martinez of Hebbronville, and Susana Martinez of Austin; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, whom she immensely adored; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and countless friends and former colleagues.

I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;
And whoever lives by believing in me will never die.
