Julie “Mom & Grandma” Moreno, (nee Orozco) age 81, from Chicago, IL, passed away January 14th, 2025. Julie is survived by her six sons, Paul V. Moreno (Shannon), Raul Moreno, Rich Moreno, Vince Moreno (Bridget), Victor Moreno and Keith Moreno; sister Connie Hinojosa; grandchildren Zachary, Nevada, Carsen and Viviana; preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice (Welita) Martell and father, Valenté Orozco, sister Beatrice Orozco, grandson Derien Moreno and former spouse and friend Paul Moreno.
A lifelong Chicagoan, Julie attended St. Patrick Catholic Elementary and High School, (known today as Old St. Patrick Catholic Church on West Adams). After high school, Julie married and raised her six children. She spent the second half of her life advocating for senior citizens. First, working in a nursing home as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She moved on to working as a Speech and Rehabilitation Assistant, then as an Occupational Therapy Assistant, and finally, as a Social Service Coordinator; all in an effort to make seniors’ lives safer, better and fulfilling. She finished her career working for the City of Chicago’s Department of Aging, as a Residence Service Coordinator/Outreach Coordinator and Spanish Interpreter, caring for 200 senior residents in side-by-side apartment buildings near North and Damen. She assisted them with medical care, financial needs, and their senior daily needs, along with anything else she could to help.
Our mom was a woman with many loves in her life, first and foremost, her children. She was as loving as she was tough. We always knew we were the most important part of her life and she loved us all unconditionally. She also had a love for cooking, especially her delicious Mexican dishes, and she took joy in preparing holiday meals for the entire family; making sure everyone was met with their favorite dish at the table. It was truly a feast for dozens, following Julie’s golden rule, “It’s better to have more than not enough!” In addition to cooking delicious meals, she enjoyed having delicious meals served to her at restaurants. She was always up for trying different foods and different flavors from all over the world. From classics to new, at home or at the theatre, our mom loved movies. Seeing one with a fresh bucket of buttered popcorn was heaven for her! She also loved the challenge of doing 5K’s around the city; finishing over 10 races with her sons, friends and granddaughter. No matter what the weather, cold, hot, raining, she completed each one…she never quit on anything.
Our mom was a cool, strong, loved by many, beautiful person! She was there for everyone whenever they needed a chat, cry, pick me up or laugh. She was a best friend to all, believing everyone should always be treated with respect and dignity.
She is now celebrating and resting in heaven with all the people she helped throughout her life! We love you Momma!
Thank you to Lupe Moreno, Grace Mendoza, Bridget and all that helped with our mother’s care. A special thanks to everyone at Rush Medical Center for providing our mother with exceptional care.
