Loretta was born on April 22, 1947, in Chicago to Sarah Simmons.
She grew up in the South Side neighborhood of Englewood and later went on to graduate from high school early, at the age of 16 and eventually began work as a courtroom stenographer. Although she finished high school early, she graduated from college later in life, earning her Bachelor of Professional Studies with honors from Roosevelt University in 2002. Loretta spent the bulk of her working career with AT&T in the corporate services department.
She married Charles Cross in September 1967, and together they shared 38 years of marriage. They raised Kevin and Derrick and enjoyed summer barbecues, spending time with Loretta’s family and festive holiday seasons.
Loretta is remembered for her easy going nature and her ability to calmly work through any challenges. She was also an amazing cook, and people traveled far and wide to enjoy her dishes. An avid cruiser, she visited many parts of the world—often more than once.
She loved science fiction movies, recording her favorite soap operas, and watching the local news on every station. Above all, she cherished time with family and friends.
Loretta is survived by sons, Kevin (Lisa) and Derrick; grandchildren, Justin, Brandon, Kevin, Zion and Zaire; her older brother Ronald (Gwin); her nieces Renee (Bill), Lanonda, Lynn, and Gina; also her nephew Ronald.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her sister Helen Bibbs; and her brothers, Connie Simmons and Howard (Sandy) Simmons.
