Norman Hane was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and educated at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, graduating in 1961. He received his Ph. D. in English Language and Literature from The University of Chicago in 1968 and taught American literature at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for twenty-four years. A poet as well as a teacher, he published a book-length collection of his work, Riding Into the Solstice, with River Oak Press in 1994, and an award-winning chapbook, Outliving, with The Ledge Press in 2015. His work has also appeared in The Spoon River Poetry Review, Atlanta Review, Poet and Critic, Poetry East, Dogwood, Plains Poetry Journal, Freshwater, En Passant and other poetry journals.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Croft Hane.
