Valerie Ann Borders

Valerie is survived by her children Alicia (Tony) Lopez, Jesse (Valeria) Arredondo, Brenda (Gabe) Phillips, Robert Arredondo and Andrew Arredondo; dog Bruno; sister Theresa (John Agnew) Borders; grandchildren Alyssa, Alexis and Aaron Lopez, and Aiden and Ayla Arredondo. She is predeceased by her father Charles Borders and sister Sharon Simpson. Her children and grandchildren brought much joy to her life, and her grandchildren lovingly refer to her as Nana.

Valerie was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on January 20, 1962 and moved to Chicago in the early 1980s. She was a social care worker for Lawndale Christian Center for many years before becoming a Cook County Health Clerk for over 25 years. She was a dedicated employee who worked with integrity, always offering grace to both patients and colleagues, and was a well-respected employee. In December 2023, Valerie received Employee of the Year for her department because she went above and beyond to assist people in their time of need. The hospital received many letters from patients about Valerie’s dedication, writing how good and kind she was to them.

Valerie enjoyed solo adventures and loved going to movies and art museums. She loved road trips (and going to All Grass Farms for milk and eggs), exploring nature, tending to her plants, antique shopping, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and fishing with her son-in-law. She loved color and vibrant prints, which was evident in her fashion and decorating choices. She cared about people and had a special love for animals. When she saw people she knew at bus stops, she would insist on driving them wherever they needed. She helped friends get to their medical appointments and with whatever else they needed. She will be deeply missed by her friends and family ... and also by Bruno, her beloved bulldog.

A visitation for Valerie will be held Sunday, October 20, from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 7750 West Cermak Road, Forest Park, IL 60130. Visitation will also take place Monday, October 21, 2024 from 10:00 AM until time of funeral service 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Interment will take place privately.
