Alice A. Doepker, 78, of Fort Wayne, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, surrounded by her family and the comfort of her beloved books. Born June 28, 1947, in Roanoke, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Margaret (Hallon) Burton.
Alice was a woman defined by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering desire to help others. She built a career in human resources, where she found purpose in helping people find meaningful work and opportunities. Her drive and creativity also led her down many entrepreneurial paths throughout her life, including owning an antique business, a ceramics company, an interior design business, and later in life, a floral shop—each reflecting her eye for beauty and her independent spirit.
She was married to her devoted husband, Tom, for over 50 years, caring for him faithfully until his passing. Alice also selflessly cared for her mother in her final days, demonstrating the depth of her love and strength for her family.
When her boys were grown, Alice pursued her college degree, a step that led her to Abingdon, Virginia—a place she grew to love deeply for its scenic mountains and the joy she found in running her flower shop. After her husband’s passing, she returned to Indiana to be closer to family. On the very day of her move, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she faced with remarkable courage and defeated. She would go on to overcome yet another serious health challenge, continuing to show her strength and determination.
Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found joy in simple, beautiful things—especially lilies, which reflected her gentle spirit.
Alice was an avid reader, often finishing as many as four books a week. Even in her nursing home, fellow residents would regularly bring her books, knowing how much she loved to read. She also had a spirited and ornery side, bringing people together in her own way—once organizing a hallway Christmas tree that turned into a shared tradition, decorated by residents and staff alike.
Above all, Alice cherished her family. She instilled independence, strength, and values in her three children: Tom (Katherine), Tony (Stephanie), and Rochelle. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Kyler, Anyssa, Taylor, and Zack, who brought her endless joy.
She is also survived by her half-sister, Linda Burton.
Alice will be remembered for her giving heart, her resilience through life’s challenges, and the way she quietly but powerfully shaped the lives of those around her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; her parents; her sister, Judy; and her mother, whom she lovingly cared for in her final days.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 6600 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne.
