Gilberto “Beto” Cardenas Sr. He was born on October 23, 1940 in Cienega de Flores, NL Mexico to the late Maximus and Josephine Cardenas. He was the youngest of 3 children. He moved to Fort Wayne in 1970 with his bride and started a family where four children were born. He was employed at Fort Wayne State Development Center for over 27 years where he received several awards for outstanding service. He enjoyed playing as well as watching baseball. He played on several leagues and became known as a powerful hitter. He belonged to the Umpires Association for over 30 years and felt honored when players would address him simply “hey blue”. He also enjoyed traveling with his family. He loved music and was a great dancer. He loved to dance with his wife, but especially his daughters. His greatest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. Beto was a dedicated husband, father, and friend. He had a big heart and smile to match. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maria Cardenas; children, Gema (Keith) Arnold, Gilbert (Heather) Cardenas Jr., Elda (Latrail) Cardenas, and Jeffrey Cardenas; grandchildren, Samuel, Emani, Evelyn, and Christian; brother, Carlos; and sister, Shelly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1pm on Friday, November 15, 2019 at the Hockemeyer and Miller funeral home 6131 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46835 with visitation two hours prior.
