Michael Lee O'Connell

Michael Lee O’Connell born September 30, 1947 to Robert Lee and Wanda Ann O’Connell, passed away Sunday morning August 30th, 2020. Our hearts and souls will always be with him. A devoted father, husband, brother, and friend, we will miss him dearly. He was preceded by his daughter Jennifer O’Connell and leaves behind daughter Margarete Strouse; brothers Tom, Andy and Joe; sisters Janet O’Connell Mauge and Joan Wier. Mike grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan where he attended Battle Creek Central High School. He excelled in academia and earned varsity letters in football and track and field, starting offensive and defensive tackle on his senior’s undefeated football team. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving his country as a military policeman in the U.S. Army. After his enlistment he earned a business degree from Central Michigan University, and pursued a career in insurance. Mike’s keen insight into home remodeling kept him busy. He enjoyed partnering with others and received tremendous enjoyment of doing “business”! Mike was always ready to help someone in need, or give out sound advice. One of Mike’s greatest character trait was as the competitor. He showed up for a racquetball tournament, playing bridge, family football games, or golf. Anyone playing or taking part in one of these activities knew they had to be prepared to be challenged and bring their “A” game. He was a great coach for his daughters’ sport programs. As an avid teacher, he could show you “how to improve” on every aspect of life’s challenges. His life touched the lives of many and memories were made. We will miss him, his humor, and his love for life.
