

RICHARD PAUL "RED" UHLIG, 87, died on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital. Born July 27, 1925, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Carl and Lena (Bulmahn) Uhlig. He was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church. He was an active member and served on various boards and committees. He participated in the church softball, basketball and bowling leagues, accumulating several 700 series in bowling. He owned and operated Carl Uhlig Machine Shop for 50 years, sponsoring many bowling teams, one of which won the Turner's National Tournament. He was a kind and generous man whose gifts of time and resources extended beyond his family to his community, including a number of years of serving as chairman of the Small Business Division of the United way. His motto was "OTHERS". Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Vera (Schmidt) Uhlig; daughters, Laurel (James) Hansen and Holly (Steven) Enustun; sisters, Betty Walter, Mildred (Roland) Keuneke and Mary (Kenneth) Vandre, all of Fort Wayne; and beloved grandchildren, Christian, Brooke and Karsten Enustun and Luke, Perrin and Shira Hansen. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth Stults and Margaret Schmidt; and daughter, Carla Uhlig. Service is 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 4245 Lake Ave., with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. Private burial in Concordia Lutheran Cemetery.
