Born on September 20, 1936, in Okinawa, Japan, Emiko was orphaned by World War II as a young girl. She and her only sister were raised by their grandmother, a foundation that shaped her steady strength and lifelong devotion to family.
Emiko worked in food service in the Fort Carson Mess Hall. Through her punctuality and strong work ethics, she quickly became a supervisor, earning the respect of those around her through consistent dedication and reliability.
Emiko was married to August Leyba for 64 years. She is survived by her spouse, August Leyba; her sons Rick, Ed, and John; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary.
Emiko loved gardening flowers and vegetables, crocheting, and cooking—especially her Okinawa donuts, a family favorite. She was a huge Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed numerous family vacations. Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions meant the world to her, and she treasured every gathering.
A faithful parishioner, Emiko attended weekly Mass at St. Dominic Catholic Church, where she looked forward to listening to sermons, singing hymnals, and worshipping alongside fellow parishioners.
Emiko always put family first. She babysat her grandkids, attended their milestones, and took deep pride in being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and steady presence in the lives of those she loved.
The family extends a special thank you to her hospice team who provided excellent care, and expresses gratitude for all family and friends who visited and sent their love and prayers.
