

Richard was born on September 6, 1934 in Denver, Colorado to Judge Osmer E. Smith and Margaret Watters Smith. He grew up in Golden, Colorado and graduated from high school in 1952. Richard served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and San Jose State University in California where he graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 1958.
He worked in various administrative positions for Kaman Sciences in Colorado Springs from 1960 to 1989 when he was transferred to Kaman Corporation in Bloomfield, Connecticut and promoted to President of Kaman Diversified Technologies Corporation. Richard retired from the company in 1997 and moved with his wife June to Perry on the coast of Maine. In 2014 Richard and June returned to Colorado Springs.
Richard is survived by his wife of 39 years June, his daughter Kathryn (Charles), son Gregory, grandchildren Sarah and Jacob, adopted daughter Audrey and her two children Harrison and Addison, sister-in-law’s Helen and Lola and brother-in-law Steven (Karen).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Abode Hospice or to Grace and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, both in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
