

Betty Ann Mitchell, beloved wife for 57 years of George H. Mitchell, M.D. local area retired physician, died November 9 at Wilburn Gardens, Fredericksburg, VA., from sequelae of strokes since 1999. She was born in Wellington, New Zealand, of Juliet Gibbons and Wilbur Wesley Gantz, December 8, 1930. She had been in assisted living for five years.
A 1948 graduate of B-CC High School, Bethesda, MD, she attended the University of Maryland for one year before her father’s untimely death. After, she worked in the National Cancer Institute at NIH as a secretary with Jessie P. Greenstein, Ph.D., noted cancer researcher. In 1955 she became the first secretary there to be titled Administrative Assistant. Later, she managed her husband’s medical office I D.C.
Survivors are son G. Hunt Mitchell III C.F.P. (Tara) of Gaithersburg, MD. and daughter, Julie Mitchell Damerson, P.A.-C (Robert) of Spotsylvania, VA.
Grandchildren are Stephanie and Chase Edward Leonard of Fredericksburg and Cameron Hunt and Jamie Grace Mitchell of Gaithersburg.
Any remembrances should go to a charity in Betty Ann’s name.
A memorial service will occur at Mullins & Thompson’s Funeral Service, 1621 Jefferson Davis Hwy. Fredericksburg, at 1 p.m. December 7 with Pastor Colin S. Howell officiating.
