Annie was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 4, 1943. She was the second of the two children of Carl and Jenette Schneidewind. She grew up an Army brat, and lived all over the US and Europe. She especially enjoyed living in Germany, Belgium, Austria and Italy.
She had an early interest in horses, and rode as a child in Europe and in Palos Verdes, California when her family settled there in the late 1950s.
In 1966 she married the late Stephen B. Place, with whom she had three children - Kim, Chip and Carl. Theirs was an Air Force family, so Annie had the opportunity to return to Europe for three years before eventually settling down in Woodbridge, Virginia, where she opened and ran a successful art gallery and picture framing shop called Ann’s Place.
On May 28,1993 she married Steven Paul Delp, a retired Army officer. Soon after their marriage they moved to Seoul, Republic of Korea for three years, another travel adventure which Annie loved. They settled in Culpeper County in 2004, where they bought a farm they named Eagle Hill. There she founded Eagle Hill Equine Rescue, which was her proudest accomplishment.
Annie was also an Arlington Lady, a group of volunteers who attend funeral services at Arlington National Cemetery to ensure that no Soldier, Sailor, Marine, Airman or Coast Guardsman is buried alone. This volunteer service meant a great deal to her, and she served for many years.
She and Steve were also active in the “Wall of Faces” project at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which, after years of work, recently celebrated having found at least one photo for each of the 58,281 service members whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Annie was always busy, and involved in many projects that meant a great deal to her and to her community. She offered her help often, gave a lot of herself, and left an indelible mark on the world she left behind.
Annie is survived by her husband, Steve; her three children: Kim (Jamie) Place-Gateau, Chip (Stephanie) Place; and Carl (Linjun Song) Place; four stepchildren: Kim (James) Delp-McCloskey, Karen Delp, Steve (Robin) Delp and Rob (Denise) Delp; her sister, Carlyn Weibel; her niece Deana (Glen) Weibel-Swanson and their son Luke; her nephew Carl Weibel; her grandson, Tyler; 10 step-grandchildren and 4 step great-grandchildren.
The family will host a memorial for Annie at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, Virginia on Wednesday, December 14th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Central Virginia Horse Rescue.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mullinsthompsonfredericksburg.com for the Delp family.
