Our beloved father, grandfather, and friend, Joel A. Somersette, aged 70, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, passed away peacefully at sunset on Friday, April 5, 2024, after a final challenging six-month battle. Born on September 28, 1953, Daddy was a hilarious, generous, and kind man who easily made friends with nearly everyone he met. His close-knit friends from his youth, who knew him as "Rainbow" for the arch of his softball pitches, will miss him deeply.
Joel is survived by his daughter, Charity Somersette Sowell; his two sons, Rob and Cass Somersette; his son-in-law, Henry Sowell; and his two beloved grandsons, Gabriel and Elijah Sowell, who affectionately knew him as "Grandude."
Throughout his life, Daddy embraced adventure and traveled the world, visiting places like India, Japan, all across North and South America, and everywhere in between. He was a huge sports fan, especially of Duke, and found joy in his morning routine of praying, working out, and going on "zen" drives. He always loved a good meal with friends, who will fondly remember the joy and humor he brought everywhere.
As a funny, frugal, and forward-thinking conservationist, Daddy even managed to incorporate his values and humor into his final wishes, requesting a "cardboard alternative" as the repository for his ashes. If you knew Daddy, you know how much he laughed about this final request.
Daddy's legacy is one of a personal relationship with the Lord and a family that will carry on his memories. We are deeply grateful for the kindness, messages, and support shown to Daddy during his final months.
In keeping with Daddy's wishes, there will be no formal service, just a small family goodbye. He hoped his friends would gather to celebrate his life in their own way.
We deeply love and miss him and will forever cherish him. His love, laughter, and spirit will always be close to our hearts.
To his family and friends, thank you for being a part of his remarkable journey.
