Born on March 14, 1983, in D.C., to Michael and Phoebe Clay, Marcus’ childhood was full of cultural experiences and great memories living abroad while his parents served in the U.S. Army. After graduating from Brooke Point High School in 2002, Marcus enlisted into the U.S. Army as a Unit Supply Specialist. His service included tours to Korea, Kuwait, Afghanistan and other stateside duty stations. Marcus embodied the Army values and the warrior ethos both on and off duty and instilled this in his Soldiers as well. After 13 years of honorable service to the U.S. Army, Marcus separated and decided to pursue his dream of becoming a basketball coach at his high school alma mater.
His goal was to contribute to his community by having a positive impact on the youth. His tenacity led to him becoming the freshman boys’ basketball team coach. His hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed as he was selected to be the girls’ basketball team coach and ultimately the head coach for the boys’ basketball team.
Marcus’ mentorship did not stop with basketball. His influence reached many students on and off the court. He was able to develop students by pushing them to achieve academic success. Many of the students were able to attend college with his initiative of focusing on the classroom.
Most importantly, Marcus was a family man, his greatest accomplishment. He cherished his wife and children. He would often tell the children to find what makes you happy and everything would fall into place. He was the gentle giant that fixed boo boo’s as well as the stern voice of reason that kept everyone on track.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Allison; three daughters, Candace, Caitlyn, and Camille; son, Christian; parents, Michael and Phoebe Clay; two sisters, Michelle Wyrick (James) and Mikema Clay; brother, Michael A. Clay (Kiona); his paternal grandmother, Flora Coger; one godchild, Kayla Copeland; eighteen nieces and nephews and a host of family and close friends.
