Velma gracefully fought lung, brain, and stomach cancer over the past five years. Born in Stafford County, Velma was the daughter of George Glenn, and Lenora Aleene Glenn, both who preceded her in death. Velma graduated from Stafford Senior High in 1961.
She worked various retail and waitressing jobs in her early years. It was at Ralph’s Grille that she met her husband, Ivan E. Brooks; it is likely that Conway Twittys’ song, “Hello Darling” was playing on the juke box. Velma married Ivan in 1973, and they enjoyed boating and fishing for 26 years together. They were epitome of the “Yours, Mine, and Ours” family. Velma’s greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed gathering with her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren for family meals. Her love for gardening and canning vegetables came in handy as her family grew. She cheered for the local teams, the Washington Nationals and the Washington Redskins. Rusty Wallace was her favorite Nascar driver. When Velma’s husband passed, she accepted a job in the mail room at Geico, where she worked for over 15 years. She enjoyed all the friends that she made, and the food days she shared with them.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory three daughters: Theresa Layton; Lisa Gurr (Ralph); and Penny Anglin (Frank); all from Spotyslvania, Va, Her grandchildren: Cliff Brooks (Erin); Laura Brooks; Neal Anglin (Alex); Krista Brooks (Hank); Blake Myers; Ashley Anglin; and Hunter Anglin. Velma was great-grandma to Evan, Cameron, Adam, and Lauren. Her stepson, Dean Brooks (Shelby) and their son Randy will remember her fondly. Her sister, Juanita Maley (Roger) and their children, Alanna (Jake) and David will miss her, as well.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Mullins and Thompsons Funeral Service, 1621 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Funeral Services will be held on March 14, 2022 at Ramoth Baptist Church, 476 Ramoth Baptist Church Road (Stafford) at 2 p.m. Graveside service will immediately follow at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Ramoth Baptist Church, American Heart Association, American Cancer Fund, or the SPCA.
