

Martha “Marty” Ann McCullars, age 86, of Southside, AL passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 21. 2024 at the Collier-Butler Chapel. Pastor Jacque Snow will officiate. A private family burial will follow at Patton’s Chapel Cemetery in Lincoln, AL. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will accept friends from 11:30 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Marty was raised in Piedmont, AL and graduated from Piedmont High School. She was a lifelong Christian and an active member of 12th Street Baptist Church. She raised her family on Lookout Mountain in Gadsden, AL. She took part in multiple Theater of Gadsden productions, and many other acting roles, with frequent co-star Larry Mize. She held many leadership roles in numerous community service organizations including The Jaycettes (state and local), Kiwanas (annual Pancake Day), past president of the Parent-Teacher Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and others. She also led the Pizitz Teen Board for several years. Marty’s hobbies included gardening, arranging flowers, watching hummingbirds, and spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed.
Marty was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Emory “Doc” Annison Word and Bertha Estelle Parrish Word; grandparents, Clayton Parrish and Annie Parrish, Samuel “Doc” Annison Word, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth “Anna” Wright Word; husband, Howard McCullars; and brothers, Dudley Word and Terry Word.
She is survived by her sons, James Howard McCullars, William Stanley McCullars, and Robin Lynn McCullars; and brother, William Word.
Pallbearers will be members from the McCullars family, Word family, and Higginbotham family.
Honorary pallbearers will be Marty’s Sunday School Class at 12th Street Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to Gadsden Regional Medical Center, including MICU nursing staff; nurses and staff at McGuffey’s Health Care; and Diane Sisk.
