Mary Ann Peeples NeSmith, 87 years old, of Anniston, AL, peacefully joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family in Birmingham, Alabama on 12 October 2023.
A devoted wife and dedicated mother of three children who was committed to raising them in the Christian church and faith. She was very active in the Anniston First United Methodist Church - serving as the Carroway Sunday School Class pianist - and volunteered her time and talents to the Anniston Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
She was born in Woolsey, Georgia in 1936 to Swain and Vonor Chapman Peeples and was their only child. They loved her immensely and worked hard to provide for her while living on a farm in Fayette County during the depression years. There she explored vegetable fields and gardens, walked alongside cattle and pigs, fished in ponds, learned to play the piano, and rode her pony. She attended Starr’s Mill Baptist Church was baptized at Starr’s Mill Park. She served as the Vice President of her Senior High School Class and went on to attend the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API), known today as Auburn University.
While at API, Mary Ann met the love of her life, Clem NeSmith Jr. from Gadsden, Alabama. Excited to start their life together and deeply in love they were married in March 1955.
Mary Ann and Clem couldn’t wait to start a family of their own, and their children were the world to them. Their first child, Nick, was born 10 months after their marriage. Seven years later, their second child, Susan, was born. And then, seven years later, their third and last child, Scott, was born. While raising the children, they navigated Clem‘s job changes and moves from Auburn to Tuscaloosa and, lastly, to Anniston. Through it all they remained steadfast as parents and committed to raising the children in the church. Mary Ann would remain in Anniston from 1972 until 2014, ten years after Clem‘s sudden passing in 2004.
Mary Ann’s children would go on to have successful careers and marriages and produce six Grandchildren. She loved being a grandparent and cherished her time with her grandchildren. She loved nothing more than spending Thanksgiving and Christmas with her children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, Dementia ultimately undermined her ability to fully experience their love and admiration later in her life.
Mary Ann will always be remembered for raising her three children with love in the Christian faith, being a loving and devoted wife, a committed volunteer, and willing servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We‘ll always remember her loving spirit and firm belief that God has a plan for each of us. We couldn’t have asked for a better mother and will miss Mary Ann every day. Her loving memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her. Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents Swain and Vonor Chapman and her husband, Clem NeSmith Jr. and is survived by Nicholas Nesmith and Dede Alexander Nesmith and their three children - Whitney Nesmith Lankford (Spouse Drew Lankford and children Averley and Slaton), Peyton Nesmith MD PHD, Haley Nesmith Patton (spouse Michael Patton), Susan Nesmith Simpson and Darrell O. Simpson and their two children - Wesley Simpson (spouse Molly Mercer Simpson) and Dalton Simpson - and Scott Nesmith (Lt Col USAF Ret) and Stefanie Zorn Nesmith and their son, Conor S. Nesmith.
A private family graveside service will be held on Monday 16 Oct 2023 at Crestwood Cemetery.
