Known to many as Coach Rickles, he was the youngest ever and final head coach of the historic Emma Sansom Rebel football team before the closing of the school in 2006. He served as Assistant Head Coach for the Gadsden City High School Titans and was the Head Football Coach/Athletic Director for the Southside High School Panthers. Although he enjoyed many wins on the field, one of his proudest accomplishments was spearheading efforts to build the modern Southside High School field house, which opened its doors during his tenure. Scott was a 1989 graduate of Southside High School where he played football and wrestled. He was a 1988 All-Area and All-County middle linebacker.He received his Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Science Education from Auburn University. While at Auburn, he served as President of the War Eagle Girls and Plainsmen, the official hosts and hostesses of the university. He was recognized as a 1995 Spade, a prestigious accolade bestowed upon the university's most influential students. He also served as the chaplain of his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. While pursuing his master’s degree, Scott served as Jimbo Fisher’s student assistant coach. Fisher, who went on to become the head football coach for LSU, Florida State, and Texas A&M, was serving as quarterback coach for the Auburn Tigers at the time. Prior to his coaching career, Scott worked as a full-time pharmacist and continued to practice pharmacy part-time for many years. During his career in education, he taught genetics, forensics, biology, and many other science courses. While teaching science courses at Emma Sansom High School, Coach Rickles was named Teacher of the Year for the Gadsden City School System. Coach Rickles was a member of 12th Street Baptist Church. He was a devout Christian and encouraged many people in their own walks of faith.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rev. James Rickles & Lucille Cornutt Rickles; Charlie Sims & Audrey Jackson Sims Whisenant.
He is survived by his children, Casey, Mary Ann, and Miles Rickles; parents, Jerry Rickles & Jane Sims Rickles; sister, Linze (Ryan) Rickles McRae; nieces, Azalea & Eve McRae.
Pallbearers will be Miles Rickles, Ray Edwards, David Funderburk, Brent Lawley, Michael Musselwhite, Larry Poole, Ronnie Tucker, and David Waits. Honorary pallbearers are members of the 1995 Auburn University Spades and the many coaches and players who walked the sidelines with him on Friday nights for more than 20 years.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 28 at Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden. Family will gather at 2 p.m. and welcome friends and extended family from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The memorial service will be at 5 p.m. at Collier-Butler, followed by burial at Beason-Union Cemetery, 328-520 Beason Cove Road, Steele, Alabama. The service will be officiated by Dr. Jay Stewart.
