Jackie Nelson, 89, died peacefully on June 10th, 2018 after a long, full life of work and family. Born on March 29th, 1929 to Philmore and Mamie House, she was one of five children. She attended Southside High School, and in the summer of 1945, she married Sylvester Nelson. They had six children. Jackie had a calling to help the sick and injured, so she went on to graduate from Gadsden State Community College where she earned her degree as a licensed practical nurse. She practiced nursing in the Alcohol and Drug Unit, serving as head nurse, at the Baptist Medical Center in Centre, AL, until her retirement. She was a member of Brannon Springs Church. She was a scout leader for the Cub and Girl Scouts and scorekeeper for the Blue Jays little league baseball team. Jackie loved Braves baseball and was a die-hard Auburn football fan. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother and enjoyed telling stories about her childhood.
Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Nelson; parents, Philmore and Mamie House; and her beloved Son Philip “Philco” Nelson. She is survived by her children, Sylvia (Bobby) Burks, James Earl Nelson, Donna Nelson Wallis, Stan (Deedra) Nelson, Patti (Michael) Rachal; grandchildren, Amanda Nelson, Brandea (Abe) Burks Covello, Charles (Michelle) Gibson III, Jason Gibson, Judd Nelson, Haley Roalson, and Casey Roalson; she is also survived by two sisters, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Collier-Butler Funeral Home on Friday, June 15th, 2018 from 1:00-2:00 p.m., graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Southside, AL.
