Edward “Ed” M. Yinger went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 4, 2024. Ed was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 22, 1949, to Harold and Shirley Yinger. The first of six kids, Ed was a born leader who was always ready to help out a friend or stranger in need.
In 1969, Ed was drafted to serve in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles. He rose to the rank of Sergeant E-5 in less than one year and earned numerous commendations and medals for his valor, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
When he returned home, Ed served as a police officer and became a football coach before attending Columbus State for Business Management. He later became a supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service, where he helped with Toys for Tots each Christmas and worked hard to take care of his employees before retiring in 2016.
Ed enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing, watching the Buckeyes and Browns, and playing cards, softball, and pool. He had a beautiful heart, a contagious laugh, and the biggest baseball cap collection you’ve ever seen.
Ed was preceded in death by his sister Janet, brother Soni (Linda), and his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa (Brad); fiancée, Brenda Partlow Davis; sisters Tamyra (Aaron) Haupt and Sandra; brother Rick (Marty); and numerous other friends and loved ones.
Visitation will be held from 4pm-7pm on Friday, February 16 at Schoedinger Northeast Funeral Home in Gahanna, Ohio, with his service being held at the funeral home the following morning, February 17, at 10am. Services will conclude with interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. If you would like to make a donation in his honor, please consider the Franklin County Veterans Outreach Fund.
