Aged 89 years old, but always refused to blow out more than 26 candles. She was born at home with a midwife on April 30, 1933 to William and Victoria (Youngman) Dixon who both preceded her in death. Betty was the oldest sister of 10 children in the family.
Betty married Eugene Herb on October 10, 1953 and was happily married for 32 years before he preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Richard Herb, for whom she didn’t even have to change her last name.
While overcoming many childhood challenges and helping to raise her siblings, she eventually graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Columbus. She then began working at a young age at the Pickerington Creamery and Clark Evans’ Greenhouse. Betty then began working for the Department of the Navy where she was proud to be the “fastest stenographer” taking dictation for high-ranking officers.
Betty was a trailblazer as a non-traditional college student in the late ‘60s and ‘70s attending Ohio Dominican and graduating Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, all while raising her two children and working full-time at East High School. She then earned a master’s degree in curriculum and foundations from The Ohio State University. After graduation, Betty worked for Ohio Dominican and the Columbus Public Schools system as a librarian, educator, and supervisor. She retired from Columbus Public Schools after designing and managing their first computer-based library system.
Betty always wanted to be on the go, at the party, or on the beach. Everyone loved her tenacity, work ethic, and generous spirit, especially with her family. She was always willing to help those in need and share her hard-earned resources. Her favorite time was any opportunity she could spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. And, let’s not forget “wine time”.
An amazing mother, Betty is survived by her son Mike Herb and his wife, Lisa, along with her daughter Theresa Leite and her husband, Randy.
“Grandma Betty”, as so many family and friends would come to know her, devoted much of her life to caring for her grandson, Jason, who preceded her in death. Grandma Betty is survived by her other grandchildren Brian Herb & Stacey, Joey Herb & Amanda, Stacey Kane & Bryan, Jeffrey Sheets & Jillian, Matthew Leite & Erin, Caitlyn Leite & Christoph, and John Leite & Michaela. Betty also loved her surviving great-grandchildren Keerah, Noah, Rowan, Brenna, TJ, Jacob, Makenzie & Cole, Michael, Julia, Reagan, Tanner, Jensen, Silas, and Elaina.
“Best Big Sister” Betty is survived by her siblings Rita Brooks, Flo Clark, Virginia Dailey & Duane, Bob Dixon & Mary, Rose Lingel & Doug, and many loving nieces and nephews. Betty was also preceded in death by her siblings William Dixon, Sr. Vici Dixon, Joseph Dixon, and Mary McAnaney.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well”
